Fundraising Ball Raises Monies for King Kigeli Foundation and Haile Selassie Foundation

By Chevalier Guye W. Pennington, GCLR

On March 3, a benefit for displaced Ethiopian and Rwandan refugees was held at the Hyatt Regency in Miami, Florida. H.M. King Kigeli V and H.I.H. Prince Ermias of the Ethiopian Crown Council lent their royal and imperial support, and the event was further honored by the attendance of The Hon. Lady Blanka Rosenstiel, honorary consul of the Republic of Poland. The King and Lady Blanka Rosentiel previously met at the International Polonaise Ball, and this event afforded them the opportunity to renew that friendship.

H.I.H. Prince Ermias and H.M. King Kigeli award the Order of the Lion at the rank of Grand Cross to The Hon. Lady Blanka Rosentiel; the Honorary Consul of Poland also received a Grand Cross in the Order of the Star of Ethiopia.

Entertainment was provided by a variety of talented pan-African performers showcasing traditional dancing, a mask dance, and music. The graceful movements and chants allowed wonderful insight into the richness of culture in different regions of Africa.

In addition to the entertainment, the evening contained a silent auction fundraiser with proceeds going towards the King Kigeli V and Haile Selassie Foundations. Amongst the items auctioned were a five-day cruise in the owner’s suite of Carnival Cruise Lines, rare wine, an autographed picture from Angelina Jolie, a signed hat from Tiger Woods, an original pastel painting by Clarence Iverson Glover, an autographed basketball from Alonzo Mourning, signed items from sportsmen Jason Taylor, Howie Long, and Archie Griffin, an original Enrique Tigo painting, free hotel stays in the Hyatt Regency, and a necklace, bracelet, and watch from Tiffany & Company.

The evening also included three speaking engagements. Dr. Tanya Pergola, who has a PhD in African Affairs and serves as Co-Director of Terrawatu in Tanzania, gave an overview of socioeconomic conditions on the African continent while H.M. King Kigeli and Prince Ermias spoke on their respective countries in east Africa.

All participants appeared to enjoy themselves, and the funds raised will be employed in a variety of manners. The Royal Rwandan Association of Knighthood and Nobility received approximately $1,500 from the evening, and efforts are already in process to explore purchasing malarial treatment as well as scholarship opportunities in Africa.
